Sophie Woodruff,

Legal Services

I am a native New Orleanian, and a third-generation immigrant. I was born to a single mom, who taught me how to fight and stand up for what is right. She was the child of immigrants, and pushed me to become the first in my family to attend college.

I was the proud recipient of full scholarship to Hampshire College, where I sharpened my justice teeth. Following my studies at Hampshire, I was awarded two Fulbrights, one to study Turkish is Istanbul, Turkey and another to work with immigrant populations in Berlin, Germany. I returned stateside with a strong commitment to immigrant justice and a desire to fight – this time legally - for change. In 2014, I graduate cum laude from Tulane Law School. I was awarded the Dean’s Award for my commitment to social justice and I won the intra-school moot court competition for my unending passion for fighting till the end.

Since leaving law school, I have worked for unaccompanied minors, been appointed counsel for immigrants in detention who suffer from mental incompetence, and established my own practice, becoming the first in my family to be a business owner.

After years of representing immigrants in the greater New Orleans area, I believe that every immigrant deserves compassionate, zealous representation, without regard to their ability to pay. That is why I established GiraSol, to provide legal representation and therapeutic services to those most marginalized by the immigration system, helping them gain legal status and access resources to build their own futures.
